Emergency Services (ES) is a primary mission of Civil Air Patrol (CAP). Emergency Services provides assistance to the community in times of need. These include natural disasters like extreme weather or results from weather like fires and property damages as well as aircraft mishaps. In recent times CAP has also provided civilian assistance to Homeland security. ES manages three basic operations on each mission - a Base operations, Air operations and Ground operations.
Search and Rescue (SAR) operations are conducted to locate and provide assistance to those in need whether due to a downed aircraft or a missing person. CAP provides SAR operations to nearly 90% of all aircraft emergency alerts. Many of these alerts or due to accidental activations of aircraft Emergency Location Transponders(ELTs)
In times of major disasters CAP works very closely with other Emergency Services organizations such as Emergency Management Agency (EMA) here in Ohio. In order to provide smooth transitions when working with such organizations CAP has implemented the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Incident Command System (ICS). This is a standardized organization that allows different emergency organizations like EMA, local police and fire and CAP to smoothly and efficiently set up needed resources and personnel in a very short time period.
